‘FINA provides clear moral leadership’: How So, Ask All Who Ever Dipped A Toe In Water

Thu, 19/04/2018 - 13:28
The SwimVortex Safe Sport Series - Editorial: Take a deep breath. Pray be seated - and gather your thoughts and senses about you before you attempt to rise after recovering from the shock: “FINA provides a role of clear moral leadership". Those are the words of FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu, the Romanian in the hot seat at HQ since 1986, a man who in 2015, as the doping crisis in swimming reached a new zenith, uttered the immortal lines: "You can't condemn the stars for a minor doping offence" ... and “In swimming it [doping] is not a big problem”. Words, words, words... but what of deeds and the test of truth?

Will Silence Kill Another Swimmer? Coach Question Poignant On Fran Crippen’s 34th

Tue, 17/04/2018 - 10:49
"We all know that silence during WW2 killed millions of people. We also know that corruption and greed in FINA killed Fran Crippen" - that's the reminder that USA Swimming received recently with a plea for the world's most powerful swim federation to hold FINA's feet to the fire on athlete safety. The statement is stark, one likely to set various folk wearing blazers bristling, scoffing and shaking their heads, just as the wider world of swimming shrugs with sadness as if to say 'this much we knew'. Silence, corruption and greed. Have they been at play in world swimming? There is plenty of evidence that would explain a communal nod with ripples and Mexican waves on washes back from far and wide in answer to the question: 'what do you think of FINA's leadership?' Today would have been the 34th birthday of Fran Crippen - and coach Dick Shoulberg wants an end to USA Swimming's silence as he urges the federation to hold FINA's feet to the fire over decisions and subsequent silence that puts athlete safety at risk

7 German Marks Must Go For Glasgow Euro Tickets, Inc Gross’ Großartig 1986 Standard

Mon, 16/04/2018 - 12:12
Those wishing to race for Deutschland at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships in August face the last-chance selection saloon of the German Open in Berlin this week.  Many a 2017-2018 warm-up event under the bridge, many still need to step up to the time standards required for a ticket to Scotland in summer. The deadline for beating the clock is April 29, the German Open due April 20-22. Much water under the bridge, too, since 1987, but the days when the GDR claimed 18 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze, back at the European Championships in Strasbourg remain linked intrinsically to the present, courtesy of a newly unified Germany and its DSV federation having adopted all GDR swim records as their own. In 2018, Philip Heintz added his name to a list of seven swimmers inside the cut so far when he clocked 1:56 over 200IM in Bergen, where the Swim Festival ended yesterday. Among seven records that would need to fall at the Open are two of the oldest on the books: the men's 200 'fly standard held by Michael "The Albatross" Gross since 1986 - and Anke Möhring's 800m free for the GDR in 1987

Sat, 14/04/2018 - 19:12
Fabio Scozzoli's advantage was 0.97sec - not bad given that the race for the Italian crown in the last day of action in Riccione was just the one lap on breaststroke. Her didn't just beat the rest, he beat himself, so to speak: in 26.73, the champion once more took down the national record of 26.91 he set at world titles in Budapest last year and leapt up from 13th to 6th on the all-time global rankings. Elsewhere, Gregorio Paltrinieri kept the 1500 crown in 14:50; Simona Quadarella secured the distance sweep with a 4:06 in the 400m to add to her 800 and 1500m wins - and who's that 12-year-old taking bronze behind Arianna Castiglione and Martina Carraro in the 50m breaststroke?
