Man who became the youngest ever to swim the Channel at age 11 tells how he endured hallucinations

3.15 pm, September 6, 1988

10 hours and 24 miles into my swim across the Channel, approximately four miles from the English coast.

By now I had been swimming the English Channel for ten hours. I had started to cry.

If I cried until my goggles were full and I could no longer see where I was going, it would all be over. 

They might pull me out. My coach John Bullet, in the fishing boat up ahead, might simply end it for me.

I heard a splash. What was it? I realised I had momentarily been swimming with my eyes closed. I opened them again.
