More air support for Rottnest Swim competitors after shark scare

Rottnest Channel Swim organisers will introduce a raft of new safety measures including a dedicated helicopter to help protect competitors following the event's first ever evacuation due to a shark sighting this year.

The dedicated helicopter will complement additional official boats and a new text message emergency system to improve communication between officials, swimmers and skippers.

A great white shark up to four metres long was spotted during this year's event in February, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of swimmers in a one kilometre area around the shark.
