It will incorporate the Henley Mile swim, which has been running annually since 2011, attracting thousands of swimmers of all ages and abilities.

Where to go swimming on New Year’s Day

There’s no better way to start the year than with a bracing dip in the open water.

Wash away your worries and dramas from 2018, and emerge chilly, cleansed and ready to face whatever the new year throws at you. After a week of slobbing on the couch, cheese crumbs clinging to your jumper, chocolate melting in your clammy palm, it’s time to get moving.

Finding yourself in the rivers, lakes and ponds of England

Freshwater swimming as exploration and therapy.

A winding road cuts along one bank; on the other looms Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in England. The water glints metallic, reflecting the grey, overcast sky.

Messalonskee’s Rushton recounts two-leg swim across the English Channel

The temperature hovers a few degrees above freezing, and under a night sky, the only sound is that of waves slapping the side of a boat.

Erik Rushton stands on its side, just a few feet above those waves. And then he jumps in. It’s not a dare, but it is a challenge. Rushton is part of a four-person team trying to relay round-trip across the English Channel.

And it’s his turn.

He had battled extreme fatigue, cold, pain, jellyfish stings and parts of his tongue falling off during the 1,792-mile journey, but there to greet him on a freezing November morning were 300 swimmers to guide the weary traveler to the shore.
